11:00-13:00 UTC | 06:00-08:00 US Eastern Time (UTC-5) | 19:00-21:00 Beijing Time (UTC+8)
Thursday, 17 December 2020

DESCRIPTION

The aim of the session is to guide students and young academics on how best to approach paper writing. The talks in the session are built around common questions that all researchers face when they first embark on paper writing. The four speakers will deliver one talk “How best to approach paper writing” comprising five integrated parts.

In part 1, M.S. Ghidaoui introduces the session and then addresses two key questions: why should researchers write papers and when is the ideal time to begin to write? In part 2, B.W. Karney explains the key elements of a technical paper and the content that goes into each element. He then addresses what to do before submitting a paper; what to do after one gets reviews; and how to handle success and rejection. Karney also briefly explore the ethical dimension of paper writing. In part 3, V. Nikora addresses the following questions: why publish in IAHR journals? JHR: past, present and future? What are vision papers and why do we have them? In addition, Nikora shares his views on impact factor as a measure of a journal’s quality and how much weight you should put into it when selecting a venue for your work. In part 4, S. U. Choi introduces the various IAHR journals and the role played by each of these journals and explains why there is a specifically Asia Pacific Division journal, namely, Journal of Hydro-environment Research. In the last part, Ghidaoui discusses the importance and obligation of serving as reviewer and shares key lessons from the past.
